Brnabic: The opening of Cluster Four in the membership negotiations with the European Union is a great recognition for Serbia (BETAPHOTO/European Council/DS)

The opening of Cluster Four in the membership negotiations with the European Union is a great recognition for Serbia, Prime Minister Ana Brnabic stated in Brussels on Dec. 14, adding that around ten billion euros would be needed for Serbia to harmonize with the transformation in the EU in the forthcoming decades.

Brnabic gave that answer to a question of BETA about how much money would be needed for the "green transformation" of the economy and preservation of the environment, speaking after the EU-Serbia inter-governmental conference and the opening of Cluster Four: Green Agenda and Sustainable Connectivity, which encompasses four chapters: Transport Policy (14), Energy (15), Trans-European Networks (21) and Environment and Climate Change (27).

The Serbian prime minister recollected that the new methodology of EU enlargement envisaged political steering of the process of EU integration, stressing that, thanks to Serbia's economy having been consolidated, the authorities now had the funds to continue reforms, especially in the rule of law, environment protection and energy transition.

European Commissioner for Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi stated on Dec. 14 that the rule of law and the normalization of relations with Kosovo remained crucial for Serbia's EU accession negotiations, and that it was important for Serbia to continue accomplishing good results on the ground in those fields. He added that the European Commission would continue to do all it can to speed up the accession process of Serbia and the entire region.
