Media Literacy Scholarship to Bear Name of BETA's Late Editor-in-Chief

A competition for awarding a scholarship for research and scientific papers in the field of media literacy, which will bear the name of BETA's late editor-in-chief Dragan Janjic, will be organized early next year, in association with the New Literacy program.

Over the course of next year, three scholarships bearing the name of Dragan Janjic, who passed away suddenly on Dec. 31, 2020, will be awarded.

Each scholarship will be worth USD1,000.

One of the founders and editor-in-chief of BETA in two terms, Dragan Janjic, died suddenly on Dec. 31, 2020. He was one of the founders of the independent Beta News Agency, where he was the Current Affairs editor and deputy editor-in-chief from 1994 to 2000, and was the editor-in-chief from 2000 to 2007.

From 2007 to 2008 he was the deputy minister of culture and information, from 2008 to 2010 he was the deputy editor-in-chief of daily Politika, and from 2010 to 2016 a media adviser of the Serbian Ombudsman. He returned to BETA as the editor-in-chief in 2016.

During his long career as a journalist, he uncompromisingly fought for objectivity and professionalism in reporting and for the rights and position of journalists and independent media. He was a member of the Independent Journalists' Association of Serbia, the Commission for the Protection of Journalists and one of the initiators of the founding of the independent journalists' trade union and a member of the Nezavisnost trade union.
