Brankica Jankovic (Beta/GIZ)

The commissioner for the protection of equality, Brankica Jankovic, stated on Jan. 27, on the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, that this day must be a warning to all about what catastrophic consequences discrimination, intolerance and hatred towards the other and the different had led to in history.

In the statement, Jankovic drew attention "the impermissible phenomenon that is becoming more and more frequent" – the indiscriminate and inappropriate use of the term fascism. She stressed that no one needed a reminder about the Serb people having been among "those who have suffered the biggest casualties in the Second World War, because of which this attitude additionally humiliates and degrades the murdered and the killed, and minimizes and relativizes one of the most horrible crimes humanity has committed."

The commissioner pointed out that respect of human rights and diversity were civilizational achievements which cannot be questioned, not even through the freedom of expression.
