U.S. and Chinese presidents Joseph Biden and Xi Jinping, respectively, congratulated Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Serbian Statehood Day, the Office of the President of Serbia reported on Feb.12.

“I encourage you and your government to keep up the hard work to implement the reforms necessary to make democratic heritage available to everyone in Serbia. The same reforms will help guarantee sustainable development, the rule of law and an attractive investment climate, and will bring you closer to joining the European Union,” Biden said.

The U.S. president said that “Serbia’s aspirations towards the EU” also depended on the progress toward the full normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina, which had to be based on mutual recognition.

“In its state-building process Serbia has consistently produced new results over the past few years, its national reindustrialization strategy is unfolding at a steady pace, the economy is expanding at a faster rate and the standard of living is improving. With the joint efforts of both states, the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Serbia is maintaining a strong development trend,” the Chinese president said in his message. Xi Jinping described bilateral political ties as firm, adding that practical cooperation has produced rich results, while the political friendship between the two countries was growing ever stronger as time progressed.
