POLL: Key EU Nations Back EU Membership of Ukraine, but Not of Serbia

A majority of citizens in four key EU Member States have expressed support to Ukraine joining the EU, while the number of those opposing is higher than those backing Serbia’s EU membership, shows research, it was said on April 5.

The new research, conducted by public opinion and data company YouGov, reveals that there is net support (more citizens for than against) in Germany, France, Italy, and Spain for Ukraine, Montenegro and North Macedonia joining the EU.
 

Willingness to accept Ukraine in the EU is 22 percent higher than the opposition to the country’s admission, for Montenegro it is nearly eight percent higher and five percent for North Macedonia. As regards Serbia, the number of those thinking that Serbia should not be allowed to join the EU membership is on average 4.75 percent higher than those supporting the country’s membership.

Individually, only in Spain there is more willingness than opposition to Serbia joining the EU. Serbia’s membership in the EU is backed by 23 percent of the respondents in France, 27 percent in Germany, 33 percent in Italy, and 41 percent in Spain. At the same time, 42 percent of the polled in France, 41 percent in Germany, 37 percent in Italy, and 23 percent in Spain think that Serbia should not be allowed to join the EU.  

The research results, published in March, surveyed between 1,020 and 2,046 adults in each country.
