Epidemiologist Predrag Kon on May 10 said that an increase in the number of new COVID-19 cases had not been registered during Labor Day and Easter holidays, but stressed that all should be careful and that vaccination was still necessary.

In a statement to state public broadcaster RTS, Kon said that summer holidays were ahead during which people would be travelling internationally, while in parallel people would be arriving to Serbia from abroad, which would assumingly increase the potential of spreading the virus.

“We are in the situation where we should be extremely strongly recommending vaccination as half of the population has not been inoculated,” Kon stressed, noting that a much higher vaccine uptake was in cities than in rural areas.

He added that for the time being it could not be expected from the World Health Organization to declare “an epidemic at the global level.”
