Aleksandar Vucic was sworn in for his second term as Serbian president at a special parliament session on May 31.

Vucic was reelected Serbian president in the first round of the April 3 presidential elections, collecting 2,224,914 votes, or 59 percent of the cast ballots.

The oath-taking took place in attendance of outgoing cabinet ministers and representatives of the judiciary, military, police, religious communities, diplomatic corps, and Republika Srpska. Opposition representatives were not present as new members of the parliament have not been appointed yet considering that final results of the parliamentary elections, also held on April 3, 2022, have not been proclaimed.

Ahead of his inauguration, Vucic told people gathered outside of the parliament building that he would do everything to preserve peace and stability in Serbia.

“As the president, I have not and I will not act in a way that pleases people, but I will be working in the best interest of citizens. It means that you will not always agree with my decisions, but we will be preserving peace and stability, guarding Kosovo and Metohija, and taking care about the future of our children,” Vucic stressed.

Vucic also said that in the time of crisis, while protecting Serbia, he would try “not to harm anyone else” and to preserve the sense of togetherness and unity. He specified that it meant “to demonstrate how we are capable of being a country of normal people, which is not canceling (Fyodor) Dostoevsky or (Pyotr) Tchaikovsky while in parallel is pursuing the EU path.”
