MEP Viola von Cramon (BETAPHOTO/MILOS MISKOV)

Viola von Cramon, a member of the European Parliament and rapporteur for Kosovo, has stated that if Serbia truly wants to join the European Union the country must impose sanctions against Russia and recognize Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence.

“This is not an ‘either-or’ situation. We’re aware of the issues surrounding [imposing sanctions on Russia] – [Serbian President Aleksandar] Vucic has explained them all – but, regardless, we need to see Serbia dedicated firstly to facing sanctions against Russia and [its] dependence on Russian fuels,” Von Cramon told the June 16 edition of the Nova daily.

The MEP further stated that, to reach a final agreement regarding EU membership, Serbia will be expected to recognize an independent Kosovo.

The latter, Von Cramon added, would entail commitments from Kosovo as well: the implementation of the court ruling whereby 24 seized hectares must be returned to the Decani Monastery and the drafting of a plan for the formation of a Community of Serb Municipalities in Kosovo.
