Epidemiologist and COVID-19 Crisis Team member Branislav Tiodorovic announced in Belgrade on Aug. 10 that certain safety measures will have to be reintroduced should daily COVID statistics continue to rise. Tiodorovic further said that the exact format of schooling for the upcoming school year would be determined in one week’s time.

The doctor told the Blic daily that his team is considering reinstating facial mask mandates for closed spaces come the fall.

“Entire families are returning infected from their summer holidays and [those of them] who are not experiencing any symptoms are moving about freely, while the recommended safety measures are not being observed anywhere. The situation is serious because we have between 4,000 and over 6,000 newly-infected daily,” Tiodorovic explained, adding that the increasing number of deaths is cause for extra concern.

According to him, a new, stronger wave of COVID infections is expected in September, so the authorities will be on the lookout for a new vaccine adapted to the virus’s Omicron strain.
