Novi Sad, August 10 2022 (BETAPHOTO/DRAGAN GOJIC)

Talks between farmers and Prime Minister Ana Brnabic lasted nine hours on Aug. 15. Agreements were reached on the value of milk premiums, loan moratoriums and oil subsidies, but not on sunflower purchase price.

Farmers have lowered sunflower price from RSD75 to RSD73 per kilogram, but the government is offering RSD70.50 per kilogram, including all handling expenses. Farmers are now waiting for the government to e-mail sunflower price, based on which they shall decide whether it is acceptable to them.

On Aug. 16, Brnabic said that an agreement was on the horizon with the farmers who had been protesting in several towns across Serbia, but stressed that their demands which “have been put on paper only to be rejected” could not be fulfilled. Brnabic also said that it was in the government’s interest to “reach an agreement,” but added that a solution had to be found which would help farmers and also protect the state budget.
