Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy Zorana Mihajlovic said on Aug. 18 that EUR1.5 billion had been spent so far on importing electricity and natural gas, the Ministry said.

She described the situation in the energy sector as “drastic” in all of Europe and explained that the cost of a MWh was currently EUR563 as opposed to EUR90 a year ago. “These prices are not normal and no country can endure this. We have spent EUR1.5 billion so far on importing electricity and gas,” Mihajlovic said in an appearance on Happy TV.

She added that electricity would be imported during the winter as well and that “we have to think about saving energy and why we are so wasteful with energy.” “For us the most important thing is to ensure that Serbia has enough money to pay for energy until March and, secondly, we need to ensure that we can produce energy and that we have from where to import sufficient quantities, because Serbia is not the only state that will import [energy]. The nervousness on exchanges across Europe can be felt through rising prices; a cubic meter of gas today costs EUR2,300,” Mihajlovic said.

The first factor in saving energy, she said, is energy efficacy, what state are windows and doors in and what citizens use for heating and the possibility of installing solar panels.
