Serbia must achieve a strategic agreement with the U.S. and European Union because resolving the issue of Kosovo and Metohija can only be done as part of a larger pact between these two powers, said Nebojsa Zelenovic, the head of the We Must-Together parliamentary group.

Zelenovic told the Nova daily that Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti cannot politically survive the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities and that it is up to the U.S. and the EU to solve this problem with Pristina politicians.

“Realistically speaking, we can expect the unfortunate license plate mandate to be postponed – one way or another – while serious steps are taken toward the formation of the [Community of Serb Municipalities],” Zelenovic said referencing Pristina’s recent demand that all vehicles in Kosovo with registration plates issued by Serbia proper replace them with plates issued by Kosovo authorities.

According to Zelenovic, the U.S. should offer Serbia a clearer and more open strategic partnership, while the EU should put forth an unambiguous proposal for incorporating the entire Western Balkans as fully-fledged members of the Union.

The MP also stated anti-American sentiment and hatred toward NATO are quite strong in Serbia, while the public in many EU member states is largely against further expansion.
