Hungarian President Katalin Novak said in the Tompa border settlement on Dec. 15 that 90 percent of illegal migrants were entering Hungary from the direction of Serbia and voiced the hope that the two countries would additionally bolster cooperation in that area.
After visiting temporary border barriers on the Serbian-Hungarian border with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and former Czech prime minister Andrej Babis, Novak said that the Hungarian authorities had stopped over 270,000 attempts to illegally cross the border this year.
"The pressure of illegal migrations is growing, and this year the number of attempted illegal border crossings doubled compared to 2021. With our friends from Serbia we have together been trying to cut the flow of illegal migrants, not just on the Hungarian-Serbian border but also on Serbia's southern border with North Macedonia, Katalin said.
She added that Hungary "is open to refugees" adding that over a million people from Ukraine had arrived in Hungary or passed through it, fleeing the war there.
