U.S. Counselor of the Department Derek Chollet is coming to Belgrade on Jan. 12 to meet with Serbia’s highest officials. The counselor is currently on a Western Balkans tour and has already been to Skopje and Pristina.

Following the talks in Pristina, Chollet said that the preconditions for the meeting between Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, have not been met.

Speaking with a number of editors-in-chief of Kosovo media outlets in the evening on Jan. 11, Chollet described his meetings with Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu, Prime Minister Albin Kurti, and the representatives of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, the Democratic Alliance, the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, and the Serb List -- as “fruitful.”

Chollet reiterated the U.S. stand that the final agreement between Kosovo and Serbia within the dialogue should be founded on “mutual recognition.”

Chollet called the formation of the Association of Serb Municipalities an urgent matter, but warned that the founding of another Republika Srpska in Kosovo the U.S. does not support and that any such action must be in accord with Kosovo’s constitution and laws.

On Jan. 12, Chollet will discuss the continuation of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, including the Franco-German proposal adopted by the EU, with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and Foreign Affairs Minister Ivica Dacic.
