The Ministry of Economy reported on Feb. 6 that the European Commission (EC) has confirmed after more than eight years of talks with representatives of the Commission and the EU Delegation to Serbia that Serbia had met requirements for the opening of Chapter I – Free movement of goods.

“Chapter I – Free movement of goods is the most important chapter in Serbia’s EU accession talks, and legally most demanding. Most of Serbia’s trade is with EU states, which is why the green light to opening this chapter is a historic moment for the state and the people,” Serbian Minister of Economy Rade Basta was quoted as saying by his department.

The Ministry of Economy will open procedure for the adoption of strategic documents by the Government of Serbia – a Strategy for Harmonized Area and the accompanying action plan, the Action Plan for Motor Vehicles and the Action Plan for Non-Harmonized Area.

After the adoption of the strategic documents, the EC will prepare a draft report on compliance with the requirement to be presented to the Council of the EU, which will be a formal confirmation by the EU that the requirements have been met.
