Moscow media reported on Dec. 4 that the encounter of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Russian President Vladimir Putin is taking place after two scandals that are casting a shadow over the visit.

“Vucic’s upcoming visit and his talks with Putin in Sochi have a principled importance, Komersant reported.

The daily further said that in the wake of two major scandals – the spying affair and the affair involving the presence Serbian mines in Ukraine – the summit should provide an answer to a major question: is Serbia ready to be the key ally of Moscow or will it continue to balance between Russia and the West.

Komersant further said quoting unnamed sources close to the government that Serbia will try to keep the balance in relations with both Russia and the West, avoiding to opt for one of the sides.

The RIA Novosti news agency reported that a series of scandals in Serbia, “once again involving Moscow, is the sole issue casting a shadow over the meeting between Vucic and Putin.”

The outlet also said that relations between two countries are being put to a test.

“A series of events this fall has presented the relations of [the two] strategic partners in a new light,” the agency reported announcing the meeting, adding that experts believe the scandals will not affect relations between the two countries.
