At its next session the Serbian government is to adopt the final version of the negotiating position for Chapter 27, which pertains to the environment and climate change, and send it to Brussels, state secretary at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the head of Serbia's negotiating team, Ivan Karic, said on Jan. 17.

"After the negotiating position for Chapter 27 received a positive opinion from the competent committees of the Serbian parliament and the National Convention on the EU, what is left to do is send the negotiating position to Brussels after its final adoption by the Serbian government, which is expected to happen next week," he told BETA.

He explained that the European Commission will forward the document to the member states for consideration, so that Serbia can finally be ready to open the negotiating chapter and start negotiations.

Karic said that the negotiating position for Chapter 27 also contains, besides the text on status and plans for implementation, 14 strategic documents which pertain, among other things, to the directives on waste management, water management and to the industrial directive.

"The document contains details on how much funding is needed for the economy and society to adapt to EU standards, as well as sources of financing and transitional periods needed for harmonization," said Karic.
