Montenegrin Foreign Minister Srdjan Darmanovic said on May 21 that Podgorica will not allow Belgrade to meddle in its internal affairs under the guise of protecting the allegedly threatened interests of Serbs in Montenegro.

In an interview for the Pobjeda daily, Darmanovic also said that the pre-election race in Serbia has begun and that Montenegro can only expect to suffer harsher words from Belgrade, which, according to him, are already being used profusely.

“Montenegro is, first of all, a civic and secular state, founded upon a constitution and laws. The different peoples of Montenegro have never been, nor will they ever be endangered, including, of course, the Serbs, and any claim to the contrary is unfounded and harmful to all, except for pre-election calculations at home and in the neighboring state. And maybe even to them,” said Darmanovic.

He said that Montenegro has “always taken proportional diplomatic steps, in line with good diplomatic practice.”

“The possible straining of relations will exclusively depend on our neighbor’s behavior. But I hope it will not come to that,” Darmanovic replied when asked if Montenegro will take additional diplomatic steps.
