The EU's efforts over the past two decades to launch political reconciliation in the Western Balkans by developing regional economic integration have shown poor results, the Bertelsmann Foundation and the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies have concluded.

Deeper economic integration with the EU and the direct role of Brussels in solving constitutional and territorial disputes is required, they said.

The study on regional economic cooperation in the Western Balkans stresses that "new kinds of various integration with the EU" are a better path toward the region's increased economic development and improving the standard of living of its citizens. "After two decades, it is clear that the EU's hopes that the Western Balkans' economic integration would jump-start political reconciliation have not been met," the study says.
