The Western Balkans have a strategic importance to the EU, EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi said on Dec. 10.

This is visible in the Economic and Investment Plan for sustainable and stable development during the pandemic, he said at a meeting of the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF)'s managing board, which was attended by Serbian Ministry of Eurointegrations and national IPA program coordinator Jadranka Joksimovic along with the Western Balkan's foreign ministers and ministers for the region's European integration.

The Serbian government has announced that the plan envisage EUR9 billion in grants from the EU for priority areas and projects for regional connecting and improving ties with the EU, which will enable the faster flow of people and goods and deepen trade and economic cooperation.

The plan will be underwritten with EU grants and favorable loans from the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Joksimovic expects the combination of these funds,  issuing guarantees and funding for Serbia's Serbia 2025 plan to incentivize the commercial and private sector to finance projects and thereby greatly grow investments in the region.
