New Earthquakes Rock Croatia

Three new earthquakes hit Croatia in the morning on Dec. 30, with the epicenter in the area of the town of Petrinja, the magnitude of the strongest being 4.8 on the Richter scale, the Croatian Seismological Service has reported.

The shocks were felt in Zagreb, 40 kilometers away from the epicenter, as well as in Karlovac and other towns.

The magnitude of the first one that struck at 6:15 a.m. was 4.7, of the second, at 6:26 a.m. – 4.8, and of the third, which occurred at 6:29, was 3.6 on the Richter scale.

According to the latest reports, seven people died and 29 were injured in the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Croatia on Dec. 29 in the area of Petrinja.

Many homes and facilities in that town were damaged, while the emergency crews, using dogs and with the help of the military and firefighters are searching the rubble for survivors.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center has estimated that the first earthquake was felt by six million people in Croatia and neighboring countries.
