On May 20 Russia condemned in the strongest terms the expulsion of a Russian diplomat from North Macedonia and announced countermeasures, the Russian Foreign Ministry has said in a statement.
"A hostile act was committed against Russia's diplomatic mission in North Macedonia on May 14. The local authorities declared a diplomat a persona non grata. We condemn in the strongest terms such an unfounded act which cannot not affect relations between Russia and North Macedonia. Countermeasures will ensue," the statement says.
On May 18 the North Macedonian foreign ministry said that it had decided to declare a diplomat in the Russian Embassy in Skopje a persona non grata in North Macedonia in accordance with Article 9 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
It explained that on May 14 the Russian ambassador in Skopje was summoned and "handed a note that orders said diplomat to leave North Macedonia's territory in seven days." The statement from the North Macedonian foreign ministry does not name the diplomat nor the reason for his expulsion.
