Oliver Varhelyi, European commissioner for enlargement and neighborhood policy, said in Sarajevo on Nov. 28 that Bosnia and Herzegovina's progress toward candidate European Union member status in the last six weeks had been faster than ever.

Varhelyi said the EU had been very transparent in all areas and that the recommendation had been clear: Award candidate status without delay.

After meeting with members of the Bosnian Presidency, the commissioner said that the recommendation came with high expectations, and that the path to the EU was open, but that results were expected without further delay. He noted that it was up to politicians to make this a reality.

Varhelyi said he wanted to see clear and tangible results to report back to the European Council and that the outgoing Bosnian Council of Ministers had to adopt all measures to allow taking a step closer to the EU.

He further stated that the new government should dedicate itself to realizing 14 priorities and conditions from an opinion of the European Commission, adding that currently the advancement toward meeting the demands was accelerated.
