Croatian President Zoran Milanovic stated on Feb. 1 that it had been a long time since Kosovo ceased to be the internal matter of Serbia, which will have to recognize it, and assessed that Serbia was welcome in the West, but that some things would have to change.

“The situation in Ukraine is the beginning of the end of the Serbo-Russian romance, in which Serbia will realize that it was the mistress, or lover, who had been cheated on. The case of Kosovo is poking Russia right in the eye. Russia will eventually have to recognize Kosovo because of Crimea; Serbia is an obstruction for Russia,” Milanovic stated at a news conference in Zagreb after a meeting with Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar.

He assessed that Serbia would have to recognize Kosovo in some way, while Kosovo politicians would have to grant the status to the Community of Serb Municipalities, which they have agreed to and signed. Milanovic added that the fulfilling of obligations would take them further on the path to the West.

“Yes, Serbia has lost Kosovo, lost it in the war. I urge the representatives of world states to recognize Kosovo if they have not yet done so,” Milanovic stated.
