The president of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski, stated in Rome on Nov. 6 that an extraordinary meeting of EU ministers would be held on the initiative of Italy, to reopen the issue of starting the negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania.
"Italy has launched the initiative and it was accepted a few days ago. An extraordinary summit of the General Affairs Council will be held, to prepare the main summit of the heads of state and government in Brussels, at which only one item will be discussed – integration and the start of pre-accession negotiations of Albania and North Macedonia with the EU," Pendarovski said in a video-statement after the meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella.
North Macedonia, Pendarovski said, has no alternative but to integrate with the EU, and other alternative models for building the Western Balkan countries' relations with the Union, different from the standards that all EU countries have passed as candidates, are unacceptable.
