Socialist Democratic Party leader Boris Tadic said on Jan. 3 that "a deal" between the Serbian and Montenegrin presidents, Aleksandar Vucic and Milo Djukanovic, was behind the developments in Montenegro caused by the recent enactment of a Law on Religious Freedoms.

In an interview with N1 TV, Tadic said that the public was witnessing "a years-long process to forge a new Montenegrin identity," which, he said, was equally useful to Serbian nationalists and Montenegrin "neonationalists."

"It's a dangerous, sociopathic process which the authorities in Montenegro have been pushing for, relying also on their collaborationists, Tomislav Nikolic and Aleksandar Vucic, bragging that the relationship with Montenegro that they built has never been better but we can see very clearly what the relationship looks like today," the former Serbian president explained in the televised interview.

Tadic said there was a consensus by all populists in the region to "use aggression to support each other ahead of elections." "All of the populists in the region, from Vucic through Djukanovic to Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic, frequently use pre-arranged attacks to boost each other's ratings and election results. Citizens should not fall for this false populism in Serbia, Montenegro and Croatia, even though the region will always be a haven for populists," Tadic has warned.
