The group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament on Aug. 16 described as unacceptable a recent attack on Serbian MP Pedja Mitrovic, who is the general secretary of the Freedom and Justice Party.
The attack on Pedja Mitrovic, who was beaten with metal bars by forces connected to Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, and sustained head injuries from the assault, is unacceptable, said Iratxe Garcia Perez, president of the Progressive Alliance of the Socialists and Democrats which, with 136 members, is the second largest group in the EP.
She went on to say that in a democracy there was no place for repressive measures against peaceful protesters or political repression. We stand in solidarity with Mitrovic, Serbian students and the democratic opposition. The government must ensure that an investigation is carried out and the attackers are held to account, and that the appropriate measures are taken, said Garcia Perez.
