As part of a North Macedonia government plan, solar panels have been placed on 108 public buildings, which will lower carbon emissions and fuel costs. The project is worth EUR20.6m, while the EU provided EUR15.5m and the remainder was secured by the government.

The project was carried out by the Ministry of Finance in association with the World Bank. The solar panels were installed in 36 municipalities on 68 elementary and high schools, six kindergartens, 18 municipal administration buildings, two culture centers, three sports facilities and one each on a healthcare center, fire station and training center.

The solar panels were also installed on three sewage processing centers in Berovo, Kicevo and Makedonski Brod, four water factories in Stip, Struga, Gostivar and Tetovo and a water pump station in Karbinci, according to Balkanenergynews.

The expected amount that will be saved is EUR190,000 a year, while the investment will pay off in 7.5 years, North Macedonia Prime Minister Zoran Zaev said, when presenting the project results.
