Balkan Stream

The construction of the Balkan Stream pipeline is over and preparations are now under way to open the pipeline for exploitation, the Dec. 17 edition of the Bulgarian Trud newspaper.

The paper cited the Bulgartransgaz company, the project carrier. The technical acceptance process is still under way along with the process of receiving a permit from the authorities so that the Balkan Stream becomes officially operational, the Tas news service has reported.

The pipeline is an extension of the Turkish Stream pipeline which runs through Bulgaria, which, the official documents state, expands the infrastructure for carrying Russian gas, the media has reported.

The Turkish Stream gas pipeline which was inaugurated on Jan. 8, this year, extends from Russia across the Black Sea to Turkey where it branches off on land to the neighboring countries of Serbia and Greece.

Gas is already being exported to Greece, Bulgaria and North Macedonia.

Supplies to Serbia and Hungary will commence after the entire infrastructure is built. The Bulgaria arm of the pipeline is 474 kilometers long.
