Last week’s visit from French President Emmanuel Macron to Serbia additionally deepened the well-developed ties between the two countries, which is in part also based on the close relationship between the two leaders. The focus of Macron’s visit was the economy, primarily a contract on the procurement of French Rafale fighter aircraft, which also has a pronounced political dimension. It is precisely because of that dimension that some are saying Serbia is through the contract on the Rafale aircraft getting closer to the West and the European Union, but the success of that process also hinges on a question that essentially was not raised during Macron’s visit – the state of democracy.
