The Democratic Alliance of Kosovo has been getting ready to form the new Kosovo government should the Self Determination Movement fail to propose a candidate for the new prime minister-designate.

Alliance leader Isa Mustafa confirmed on April 13, according to gazetaexpress.com web portal, that he had asked the party’s steering committee for permission to form a coalition with the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, the Social Democratic Initiative, the New Kosovo Alliance, and the minority parties, which would constitute Kosovo’s new government.

“In case the Self Determination Movement, a relative election winner, exhausts all constitutional procedures, the next in line, the Democratic Alliance of Kosovo, should be offered the mandate,” Mustafa said.

Two weeks ago, Kosovo President Hashim Thaci had sent a written request to the Movement’s leader and outgoing prime minister, Albin Kurti, as the leader of the party with the most seats in the Assembly, asking for the name of the new prime minister-designate. Kurti said he will reply, but that “now is the time to work together on the prevention and overcoming of the situation created by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

According to the Kosovo Constitution, there is no specific deadline by which the president should receive a reply to his request. Kosovo’s lawyers and law experts offer different interpretations of the actual situation Kosovo is now in, after Kurti’s cabinet was voted out of office by the Assembly.
