Social Democratic Party leader Boris Tadic said on April 30 that the unification and creation of “a big new” Democratic Party is a prerequisite for replacing Aleksandar Vucic’s regime.

The former Serbian president believes that “only a newly-built organization with a strong political infrastructure, with experience with both defeats and victories, and not ad hoc movements and NGOs, can topple the monstrous political structure of the Serbian Progressive Party with its 700,000 followers.” “Who doesn’t understand this, doesn’t get politics at all,” Tadic said for Blic daily’s May Day issue.

The forming of the two parties’ joint caucus, Tadic added, is “the first important step” toward the creation of such an organization, from which other joint bodies should spring until its final unification, which, according to him, needs to happen as soon as possible.

When asked if the unification into a big Democratic Party can be a step toward participating in the elections, Tadic replied that that depends on political circumstances, which are changing daily.

“In that sense, the unification can be a step toward a more resolute decision to boycott the vote. However, in [these] difficult and quite extraordinary circumstances, the opposition’s unity even on this matter is far more significant than any individual [party] decision,” Tadic pointed out.
