Party of Freedom and Justice leader Dragan Djilas said at a June 14 session of the party's steering committee in Pozarevac that Serbia's future was in Europe, the party reported in a press release.

"We are part of Europe. And since we are, we need to have our representatives in the European Parliament. We trust that the future of Serbia lies in the European Union, and that Serbia's accession to the European community of nations should be one of Serbia's strategic goals," Djilas said.

The opposition leader said that creating a free and democratic society based on European values was in the best interest of Serbia and its citizens, and that the EU accession process was an excellent opportunity for the comprehensive political and economic transformation that the party had been advocating.

The party's delegates and members who arrived from across Serbia adopted a European Charter at the convention. The party suggested in the Charter that Serbia should immediately accept the Union's new enlargement methodology and reach an agreement with the European Commission on specific modalities for its implementation, the party release says.
