League of Vojvodina Social Democrats leader Nenad Canak has said that the European idea in the Balkans will be at stake in the elections in Montenegro due on Sunday, Aug. 30, adding that the “pro-Greater Serbia and pro-Kremlin” opposition is preparing incidents in that country in the event of their defeat.

“Montenegro must remain the beacon of pro-Western and pro-European thought. And such Montenegro is not in the interest of the Kremlin, i.e. the political elite of today’s Russia, so I am afraid there will be incidents in the night between Sunday and Monday. Such a scenario is already being announced by pro-Greater Serbia and pro-Kremlin opposition forces in Montenegro,” Canak told the Podgorica-based daily Dnevne Novine on Aug. 26.

He added he has no doubts that the pro-European and pro-NATO forces in Montenegro will win the vote.

Canak also said that the protest processions organized in Montenegro by the Serbian Orthodox Church, “allegedly because of dissatisfaction with the Law on the freedom of religion in that country,” are actually political gatherings.

“From the very beginning the processions were a political movement to annul Montenegro as an independent state, to reduce its role to an appendage of the Belgrade and Kremlin policies, which, essentially, is one and the same. All this that is intensively in progress should end not only in the annulment of Montenegro as a state, but also of the right [of the people] to feel [they] belong to Montenegro and the Montenegrin nation. This is now cristal clear,” Canak said.
