Medical personal protective equipment from European Union stocks needed to fight the COVID-19 pandemic arrived in Serbia on Dec. 20.

The EU's latest donation to Serbia includes 500,000 masks and 500,000 gloves, some 50,000 protective suits including shoes and 5,500 pairs of protective goggles. The EU Civil Protection Mechanism provided the funds for the donation and the equipment was delivered from the joint European reserve RescEU in Greece, the EU Info Center said in a press release.

The EU sent the aid to the health care system and other agencies at the request of the Serbian authorities because of the high number of coronvirus cases in Serbia and the ongoing need for protecting doctors and other medical staff. EU Delegation to Serbia head Sem Fabrizi said that the EU had worked around the clock to continue to provide support to Serbia in these hard times.

Responding to the pandemic crisis, the EU acted quickly to make EUR93 million available to Serbia, EUR15 million of which has been earmarked for immediate use, while EUR78 million will be spent on medium-term economic recovery.
