Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Ivan Korcok has said in Belgrade he hopes that Serbia will open new negotiating chapters during Portuguese Presidency of the EU.

Speaking at a joint news conference with Serbian Foreign Minister Nikola Selakovic in the evening on Feb. 8, Korcok said that Slovakia backed Serbia on its EU path and expected Belgrade to make progress in two areas.

“One of the areas is the rule of law, which is very important, but not for Brussels, but for your citizens. We in Slovakia know that the rule of law is the precondition for prosperity and security,” Korcok stressed.

Korcok added he was also expecting to see progress made in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue and expressed full support to his compatriot, Miroslav Lajcak, who has served as the EU special representative for the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue.

Korcok expressed the hope that the dialogue would produce an agreement, which would be acceptable to both sides and tha t Serbia, as the biggest country in the region, would be a crucial and reliable factor of stability and good neighborly ties.
