Chair of the European Parliament's (EP) Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) David McAllister has said that the election framework needs to be improved in Serbia, which is why the EP is ready to resume the inter-party dialogue that could help in the preparation of reforms.Serbia
In an interview with CorD magazine, McAllister said that "creating trust in institutions and equal conditions, including an independent media environment for all political actors who wish to seek citizens' support, is key."
On the subject of numerous amendments to the EP report on Serbia, which the plenum will deal with in March, McAllister said that besides recognizing the progress made in Serbia's relations with the EU the MEPs were also calling for improvements of democracy, rule of law, fundamental rights, media freedom, and the fight against corruption.
He recalled that, in the opinion of the European Commission, Serbia obviously still had a lot of work to do on fundamental reforms. "Progress in the chapters on the rule of law will set the pace of the accession negotiations," McAllister added.
