More than one half of LGBT people in Serbia do not expect much from the newly-established Ministry of Human and Minority Rights, but nearly as many believe that a same-sex union bill might be passed this year, a research released on March 17 showed.

The study carried out by the Center for Society Research and Development IDEAS and the Regional Info Center showed that some 55 percent of the LGBT respondents believed so.

"In spite of the fact that most of the LGBT respondents felt that the passage of a law on same-sex marriages might truly improve the quality of their lives, they also fear that the new legislation could also trigger additional stigmatization of the group," the authors of the research say.

The study shows that as many as 56 percent of the interviewed LGBT people have been exposed to discrimination over the past 12 months, while violence, just like over the past few years, continues to top the list of problems the LGBT community in Serbia faces on a daily basis.
