Independent Society of Journalists of Serbia (NUNS) president Zeljko Bodrozic said on Oct. 19 that the EU had for years done nothing to improve the poor state of the media sector in Serbia.
Bodrozic told BETA that it was good that the European Commission's latest report on Serbia's progress in the process of European integration notes and detects anomalies that are detrimental to journalism in Serbia, but that the fact that it was not using its instruments to fix the situation was a problem.
"European officials, whenever they come to Serbia, have more compliments for the authoriteis than criticism which is contrary to all of the European Commission's reports over the past several years. They are behaving as if they support the lack of media freedoms in Serbia," he stressed, adding that the EC's report on the state of media freedoms in Serbia did not correspond to what EU officials were doing on the ground.
