Member of the European Parliament Viola von Cramon-Taubadel said on Nov. 20 that it was completely unacceptable that Serbia, an aspiring member of the European Union, was tolerating the construction and maintenance of a factory that is reportedly staffed using human trafficking and forced labor in its territory.
"The Serbian government's silence on this forced labor means that they are complicit in modern slavery," Von Cramon tweeted. She said she was appalled by recent reports about the treatment of Vietnamese workers who built the Chinese Linglong investor's tire factory near Zrenjanin.
The MEP appealed on the Serbian authorities to urgently react to the blatant abuses of workers' rights and human dignity in the country. "Serbia must demonstrate that it belongs to the European family of nations by promoting a high standards of human and workers' rights, including through the conduct of thorough due diligences of Chinese investments in the country and through the enforcement of labor and environmental standards," Von Cramon stated.
