In the last 24 hours, 26 people have died of COVID-19 in Serbia bringing the death toll to 12,594.
The presence of the virus was found in 976 out of 9,265 tested samples, the Serbian Health Ministry said on its covid19.rs website. There are 2,074 patients currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in the country, 99 of whom are on ventilators.
Since the outbreak, 7,158,932 people have been tested in Serbia of whom 1,290,469 were found to be positive for the coronavirus.
Epidemiologist Branislav Tiodorovic said on Dec. 26 that medical professionals agreed that Serbia needed more restrictive anti-pandemic measures, stressing the requirement for all-day COVID passes. He added that the new variant of SARS-CoV-2 was milder than the Delta variant, but that Omicron could still cause complications in people with weakened immune systems and chronic illnesses.
