Nebojsa Zelenovic, one of the main parliamentary candidates of the We Must coalition ticket, said on March 16 that Serbia membership in the EU largely depends on the country itself and the path it wishes to take.
“We’ve been standing still in the dark for a decade. That’s why it is necessary for Serbia and all the countries in the region to join the EU quickly and reach a largescale agreement with the West,” Zelenovic told the Politika daily.
According to him, Serbia is an inextricable part of European civilization and the country’s citizens rightfully expect to live in a society founded on and embodying European values.
Asked whether Serbia could realistically expect to be accepted into the EU without recognizing Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence, Zelenovic pointed out that five EU member states – four of which are also in NATO – have not recognized Kosovo either. In fact, Zelenovic maintained, full EU membership would only help resolve problematic relations.
“An agreement between Belgrade and Pristina can be reached through strategic collaboration with the EU and U.S. In Serbia, such an agreement would have to be verified via a referendum,” Zelenovic concluded.
