A member of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences and Arts and a retired professor of the School of Philosophy in Novi Sad, Julijan Tamas, said on March 28 that Russia had been controlling Serbian government decisions for a long time, and that nourishing Vladimir Putin’s image in Serbia started when Aleksandar Vucic took over.

Professor Tamas, awarded the Charter 55 of the founders of independent Ukraine, said in an interview for the Al Jazeera portal that tying Serbia to Russia and China was not merely emotional. “In Russia and China, too, the ruling structures are surrounded by highly corrupted tycoons, and the current authorities in Serbia are using the opportunity to get enormously rich under wraps,” Tamas said.

The professor said that it is easy to draw a parallel between Hitler’s attack against Poland and the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. “Hitler had broken a contract with Stalin, and now Putin has tricked the West and attacked his Slavic brothers, disregarding the fact that Russia, together with the West, guaranteed peace to Ukraine if the country surrendered nuclear weapons,” Professor Tamas explained.

Putin’s goal is simple – that Ukraine as a state should not exist, along with Ukrainians as a nation with its language and culture.
