Neither the Serbian Ministry of Defense nor the Army of Serbia have any laboratories for the development of biological weapons, Radio Free Europe (RFE) quoted these institutions as stating in the evening of March 29.

Responding to RFE’s direct question on the matter, the Defense Ministry said: “Such projects have not been considered [and] not the subject of any talks or agreements [Serbia has] with any other country, including the U.S.”

RFE recalled that, in mid-March, Russian officials alleged the existence of bioweapons labs in Ukraine – developed in cooperation with the U.S. with Russia as the intended target – adding that those statements “have been proved false.”

According to RFE, a similar narrative was used in Serbia by certain pro-Russian media, which support Serbia’s right-wing political parties and movements. Said media published allegations that several Serbian cities are housing laboratories for the development of biological weapons, similar to those said to exist in Ukraine. In response, the University of Nis’s School of Medicine, in Southern Serbia, told local media that any such claims were completely untrue.
