The European Parliament's (EP) rapporteur for Kosovo, Viola von Cramon, stated on July 6 that the time was still not right for Kosovo to apply for membership in the EU, because that would be blocked by the five EU countries which do not recognize Kosovo as independent.
"We support Kosovo's application for the Council of Europe, but we have made a clear difference regarding application for the EU, because of the countries that do not recognize Kosovo," she stated.
According to reports in the media in Pristina, Von Cramon stressed that membership in the EU would not be possible without the agreement between Kosovo and Serbia. "The report (of the EP) underscores the need for normalization of relations with Serbia, based on mutual recognition. The dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina has not been very progressive and agreements reached in the past have been brought in question," stated Von Cramon.
Despite the signals from the EU, the leaders of Kosovo institutions have announced that they would apply for EU membership this year.
