The U.S. ambassador in Belgrade, Christopher Hill, has stated that he has “no doubts” that Serbia must orient itself toward the West.
In an interview for the Sept. 1 edition of the NIN weekly, Hill said that Serbia must choose a pro-Western path for the sake of its children. “Many young people are leaving Serbia for the West. I don’t see anyone going east. Hence, it seems rather clear which route Serbia wants to take,” the ambassador elaborated.
Hill further told the weekly that the U.S. values Serbia as a partner and supports its aspirations to become a fully-fledged member of the EU. “I would also like to see our friend and partner Serbia perhaps one day decide to join NATO,” Hill added.
The diplomat reiterated his country’s stance – shared by the EU – that Serbia should join the sanctions against Russia. As for the EuroPride event that was scheduled to take place in Belgrade, Hill said that he would be attending “in some capacity.”
“I have to say that many countries, including Serbia, have made great strides in this issue. I believed that hosting an event such as EuroPride would provide Serbia with the opportunity to demonstrate how much effort it invested in showing respect to people with different lifestyles,” the ambassador concluded.
