By the leading global indicator of perceived levels of corruption in the public sector for 2022, Serbia scored 36 on a scale of 0 to 100, dropping five places to 101st position, Transparency Serbia said in a release on Jan. 31.
In the 2020 and 2021 rankings, Serbia scored 38, placing 94th and 96th respectively by corruption perception index (CPI), published by Transparency International.
Serbia’s 2022 score is the lowest in the last 11 years, since an updated methodology has been used to construct the index for to better capture changes in perception of public sector corruption, Transparency Serbia said.
According to Transparency Serbia, after a decade of stagnation, this drop in Serbia’s ranking “was expected in the situation of flagrant violations of a number of anti-corruption laws.”
Serbia’s CPI is seven points below the global average. Out of the countries in region, only Bosnia and Herzegovina has a lower score of 34, while Albania shares the 101st place with Serbia in the global ranking.
