In Strasbourg on April 18, European Parliament (EP) members will vote to scrap visa requirements for Kosovo’s citizens, which will apply no later than Jan. 1, 2024.

The new rules would allow Kosovo passport holders to travel to the EU without a visa for up to 90-day say in any 180-day period, which would place the whole Western Balkan region under the same visa regime.

Upon its adoption in the EP, the document should be signed and published in the Official Journal of the EU.

Visa-free entry to the EU for Kosovo passport holders has been proposed by the European Commission based on its assessment that Kosovo has made significant progress in all conditions set in the visa liberalization roadmap.

On Nov. 30 2022, ambassadors of the EU member states agreed the negotiating mandate on visa-free travel for Kosovo passport holders.

Pristina has been waiting for visa liberalization with the EU since July 2018, when the European Commission confirmed that Kosovo had fulfilled the remaining two criteria for visa free-travel (ratification of the Border Demarcation Agreement with Montenegro and success in combating crime and corruption) and had thereby fulfilled all the conditions set in the visa liberalization roadmap.
