The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) will protect the entire Montenegrin border, not only the border areas shared with the states of the European Union (EU), Croatia and Italy, which has been the case so far.
The new arrangement has been provided for by an agreement between the Union and Montenegro on operative activities the Frontex will be conducting in Montenegro. The agreement passed by the Council of the European Union is approved on behalf of the Union, says a document Montenegro’s Pobjeda daily had access to on May 10.
The agreement will go into force when published in the Official Journal of the European Union. “The Council of the EU relies on the Agreement to grant broader powers to the Frontex along Montenegrin borders with third countries, namely, Albania, Kosovo, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the largest inflow of migrants and most of illegal crossings have been recorded,” Pobjeda reported.
