Judita Popovic, who recently resigned as member of the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM), has stated that “the authorities are absolutely controlling the work of the regulator, more accurately the country’s president does, and he, via the regulator, keeps the pro-regime media under control.”
“These are the PMIs (public media institutions) of Serbia and Vojvodina and four commercial television stations with national broadcasting licenses, and together they reach almost every citizen of Serbia,” Popovic stated in an interview to the June 22 issue of the Vreme weekly.
In her words, “that is exactly why these media service providers have national coverage – to fulfill the regime’s need to manipulate public opinion.”
According to Popovic, “the role of reality shows and various ‘Current Affairs’ and ‘Good Mornings’ and similar content on the Happy and Pink televisions is to render news broadcasting pointless.” “They make it pointless by lies and manipulation, preventing people from reaching their own conclusion on a subject on the basis of real information. The citizens are given an abundance of controversial information that bewilders them. The result is a society in confusion,” Popovic stated.
